Air filters are designed to keep dirt, dust, and various harmful elements from entering the engine ensuring its optimal performance levels for years to come. No matter how powerful the two- or four-stroke motor of your ATV or UTV, it needs the proper amount of air for efficient performance. Moreover, that air should be clean. This is when air cleaners come into play. To successfully fulfill their task, they have to be cleaned on a regular basis and replaced when needed. With a dirty filter, sand, dust, and pebbles will be sucked into the motor taking a toll on its performance and causing its further serious damage.
How often the filter should be cleaned and/or changed depends on a number of factors. For example, if you are a casual rider, cleaning it before the new riding season will be enough. However, if you are an avid rider and like to push your powersports vehicle to its limit off-road, your filter should be cleaned after every dirty ride. It isn’t time-consuming or tedious, but incredibly important for reliable and lasting engine operation. However, keep in mind that some filters are re-oiled and should be periodically dunked in special oil.
Today, air cleaners come in three main types: paper, foam, and fabric, each of which has its own pros and cons. Paper ones are currently most commonly used for a number of reasons including easy installation, cleaner emissions, etc. Air filters also differ in their design. Thus, they have different numbers and depths of foam cells or pleats. If your filter is completely worn out or damaged and requires replacement, don’t wait too long to replace it.
