But before you start shopping for a new starter or its components, we want to give you a brief explanation of how the starter functions and how to determine whether it needs replacement or not. The engine of your ATV/UTV burns the air-fuel mixture, generating mechanical power that moves your vehicle. To draw fuel and air into the engine's combustion chamber where they are ignited by a spark plug, the engine has to spin at some speed creating a suction action. The starter helps to crank the engine so that it gets the momentum before it starts turning on its own.

While earlier most powersports vehicles were equipped with a kick starter which had to be pushed down with your feet until the engine started, most ATV/UTV starters available on the market these days are electric. An electric starter allows you to make the engine turn simply by pressing the button. It needs high electrical power which it gets from your vehicle’s battery. The starter and the battery are connected with each other through thick wires, and if the battery is discharged or doesn’t have enough power, the starter won’t be able to work properly. The starter itself is comprised of two main parts: the starter motor and the solenoid.

Typically, a solenoid connects to the “+” battery cable and a starter motor. The motor has a small pinion gear which engages with the engine flywheel (flexplate) making the engine start. When you activate the ignition switch, the battery power starts activating the solenoid. Then the solenoid transmits power to the motor which in its turn also becomes energized. As a result, the electromagnet inside pushes an iron rod with a pinion gear, allowing the gear to engage with the flywheel. This is what causes the engine to turn. When the engine has picked up speed, the starter disengages and the engine spins on its own. Unfortunately, the starter motor and solenoid tend to wear out or can burn out due to electrical issues. When at least one of these components fail, you’ll most likely have to replace the whole starter. However, there are many components that can be fixed. When, for instance, you hear a grinding noise, you may just need to replace a worn out pinion gear.
